Is Plastic Surgery Only For The Vain? In the past, those having cosmetic surgery have sometimes been criticized as being vain, but today that idea is rejected by most people. Sure, there are still a few that think only the self absorbed have plastic surgery, but too many people have seen first hand the sometimes amazing benefits when friends or family have had these procedures. Instead of something that only a vain person would do, people are waking up to the fact that cosmetic surgery can be a great method of self improvement. This change in attitude is no surprise either, because our culture has long supported the ideas of self improvement and bettering appearance. For example, the cosmetics business is a multi billion dollar a year behemoth that seems recession proof. Another example is weight loss products, another huge industry that just gets larger every year by promising to help us look better. And what about the fitness industry? How much of the pursuit of these programs is because of how they promise to make us look? Why then, would plastic surgery be any more vain that any of these other examples? Dental surgery and the use of braces can sometimes be time consuming and expensive, but rarely viewed as vain. After all, these people are just trying to improve their appearance, just like those who have plastic surgery. So the question is who is the judge of when attempts to improve appearance become vain? Can we really decide that for someone else? After all, there may be something about a person's appearance that seems like nothing to us, but has bothered them their entire lives, and the worry about it has severely handicapped them socially and professionally. If advances to cosmetic surgery have made it possible and affordable to correct these problems, who are we to say they should not do it? If there is something about your appearance that has always bothered you, you should feel free to consider having plastic surgery without worrying about judgemental people with outdated attitudes.
