Cosmetic Surgery - What Are The Risks And Benefits?

Cosmetic Surgery - What Are the Risks and Benefits?

While plastic surgery might seem like a simple and easy way to bring back the youthful appearance to your skin, there are many risks associated with plastic surgery. There are certainly some benefits, too, however. Let's look at a few.

Benefits

One of the most obvious benefits of plastic surgery is the immediacy of it. That is, you go in one day for your procedure and by the end of the day, you will have completed the procedure. Some procedures will allow you to go on with life quickly and easily, while others will have a small period of recovery.

In any case, there is immediacy to these procedures. You don't have to undergo a series of treatments over a period of months (as with facials or other similar treatments) and you usually don't need to repeat the procedure, or at least not for many years.

Other benefits of plastic or cosmetic surgery include:

Sometimes the effects are long-lasting and won't require further treatments. Much depends on the quality of the surgery, your age and how you treat your skin, and the kind of procedure you have done. But on the whole, most plastic or cosmetic surgeries will last a number of years before they must be "freshened". Some will require a refresher sooner.

People who have plastic or cosmetic surgery often have a better sense of self, and higher self esteem. For many women, getting older is difficult and seeing your skin age and sag can be emotionally straining. Plastic surgery procedures can quickly provide you with more youthful looking eyes, skin or overall tone. You immediately feel better about your skin.

Disadvantages

But plastic surgery options aren't always for the best. There are many disadvantages to having plastic surgery procedures. Let's look at a few.

First, plastic surgery options are expensive. Depending on the procedure you can easily spend several thousand dollars on a procedure that's designed to make you look younger. Get more than one procedure and your cost increases exponentially.

Not all procedures are long-term. Some procedures, such as Botox, must be repeated every few months. Other procedures (including full facelifts) will have benefits of a limited duration and at some point, the benefits will wear off and the skin will sag and bag again. Then the procedure must be repeated.

Plastic surgery options can be dangerous. From pain and swelling to possible infection and - in rare cases - even death, plastic surgery can often result in a variety of side effects that might be less than desirable.

Although there are disadvantages, there are many situations in which plastic surgery is a fine option. Only you will know the reasons why you want plastic surgery and if that option is the best for you.
